Gardener Jean-Baptiste de La Quintinie, admired by King Louis XIV for his mastery over the royal gardens, is invited by the regent to Paris, but, horrified by city life, Quintinie returns to Versailles where he strikes up a friendship with political radical Philippe de Neuville and comes to see the injustice of the king's policies toward the poor.
