Investigates the link between the evolution of subjective experience in far-flung ocean species like sponges, shrimp, coral, fish, and octopuses, and the subsequent evolutionary development of consciousness in land animals, including insects, birds, and primates. Argues that the development of the animal body in the ocean directly led to sensory and subjective experience in evolved animals.
