Wuthering Heights was Emily Bronte's only novel, published in 1847. It had poor sales and was criticized for its haunting depiction of the uncontrolled passion between Cathy and Heathcliff. Victorian readers were not amused. Today it is perhaps recognized as the most sophisticated novel of the Gothic genre. The story of the mysterious gypsy boy, Heathcliff, adopted by the Earnshaw family, and his stepsister, Cathy, remains popular today.
