In the late 1990s, Maria, a racially ambiguous girl, is about ready to marry Khalil, her college sweetheart, and the future life she had always imagined seems in reach--Khalil has made money on the first dot-com economic boom, and she is preparing to finish her dissertation on the Jonestown massacre. Then she finds herself fixated on another man, a poet she hardly knows, and then secrets from her past threaten to undo Maria's life and her very personality.
