Presents the first international survey of bears divided into 3 sections. The first, Evolution and biology, provides an overview of the origins, development, biology, and behavior of bears. The second section, Bears up close, examines each species in detail and reviews the most recent research findings. The final section, Bears and humans, surveys the history of interaction between bears and people and provides advice on how people should behave in bear territory. Considers human attitudes toward bears from the viewpoint of anthropology, art, and literature and evaluates the role of bears in zoos and circuses and their use as sources of food and medicine.
