As humanity prepares for the inevitable arrival of the alien Formics, they recruit a young child named Bean to attend Battle School and become a member of the next generation of commanders tasked with protecting humanity. Although Bean excels under the tutelage of Ender Wiggin, his life becomes all the more complicated upon the discovery of a long-lost brother and the return of a deadly enemy.

Bean has been in training for months to graduate to Command School. A crisis occurs involving the discovery of a brother he never knew and the return of his worst enemy. The crisis has been engineered as a final test before graduation.
