Tells the story of Helga Estby, a Norwegian immigrant to the U.S. who, in 1896, set off on foot from Spokane, Washington, with her teenage daughter Clara, in answer to a wager from a mysterious sponsor who offered ten thousand dollars to a woman who could walk across America.

Seventeen-year-old Clara tries to help her mother raise enough money in 1896 to save their home from foreclosure and announce their plans to walk over four thousand miles from their hometown in Washington to New York City within seven months for a reward of ten thousand dollars.
