It is 2099 and Miguel O'Hara has become the new Spider-Man. Just in time, Spider-Man is rescued from the Public Eye by the mysterious Thanatos, who begins to style himself as a new hero. However, Spider-Man figures the old villain must have something up his sleeve.

Spider-Man has prepared for the day he will face the Sinister Six--Doctor Octopus, Electro, Rhino, Sandman, Mysterio, and Chameleon--but he is still not ready when they come after him when all of the other superheroes are away from New York City. Spidey literally has no place to go after Doc Ock gets the entire planet looking for the hero in exchange for a solution to global warming.

On his deathbed, Dr. Otto Octavius, aka Doctor Octopus, asks to see Peter Parker and, when Peter goes to see what he wants, the villain does a mind swap, leaving Peter trapped in prison in a dying body with only hours to save himself. Meanwhile, Octavius, in Peter's body, sets out to get his revenge upon Spider-Man from Peter's friends, family, and reputation as Spider-Man.

Spider-Man tries to save a new hero, Alpha, from both himself and the Jackal when the brash teenager's power draws the villain's murderous attention. Then, Spider-Man is caught in the middle when the original Hobgoblin, Roderick Kingsley, returns to claim the name from an upstart, Phil Urich, who has taken up the identity of Hobgoblin.

Collects issues one through five of "Spider-Man/Doctor Octopus: Negative Exposure" comics, in which Spidey's ongoing battle with Doctor Octopus is complicated by the jealousy-motivated actions of a photographer at the "Daily Bugle" where Peter Parker works as a stringer.
