Ken, a sensitive 10 year old boy, is misunderstood by his authoritaran, ex-military father, and struggles to live up to the high standards set by his older brother. Ken's mother convinces his father to let Ken have a horse to teach him responsibility. To his father's dismay, Ken chooses the wildest, most unmanageable filly on the ranch. Ken and Flicka must surmount his father's disapproval and other challenges as they struggle to grow up together.
Sequel to: My friend Flicka. Thunderhead is Flicka's first foal. Ken wants to make a race horse out of him, but Thunderhead disappoints him. Followed by: Green grass of Wyoming.
