As a child, Anna loved to collect plants and insects with her scientist father. As an adult, she became a botanist, and in 1843, published the first book of photographs---cyanotype prints of her vast seaweed collection.

Describes the life of Josiah Harlan, a Pennsylvania Quaker who travelled to Afghanistan in the 1820s, became a surgeon for the Maharaja of Punjab although he had no medical training, assisted the exiled Afghan king, and was commander in chief of the Afghan armies.
