The reader is invited to become an child of the 1800's and given several options to choose from, allowing them the opportunity to explore what poor children forced into wage slavery experienced and see how the children's choices and the actions of others, such as reporters and activists, eventually led the end to child labor.

This book describes the hiring of children to work in factories in the 1800s Industrial Revolution. The reader's choices reveal the perspectives of a boy working in a cotton mill in England, a girl working in New Bedford, Massachusetts, and a "newsie" selling newspapers in New York City.
