In the fall of 1915, archaeologist-sleuth Amelia Peabody sets off with her family for Egypt and finds a much different Cairo than what was there the previous year, filled with soldiers and brazen tomb raiders--and the discovery of a fresh corpse in an ancient tomb sets Amelia onto a course of new sleuthing.

Spinster heiress Amelia Peabody, facing the prospect of traveling to Egypt alone after her companion is taken ill, rescues young Evelyn Barton-Forbes who has been abandoned in Rome by her lover, and forms an alliance that proves to be dangerous and beneficial to them both.
