French police inspector Lucien Anatole Joly calls in his old friend Gideon Oliver to help solve the mystery of old buried bones, and several other dead bodies that follow in their wake.

Gideon Oliver, a professor of forensic anthropology who has become known as the Skeleton Detective, finds his much-anticipated vacation in Italy interrupted when he is asked to determine whether the bones unearthed from a construction site are those of Achille, the kidnapped son of Gideon's host.

While on his honeymoon, Professor Oliver is involved in a murder investigation at a dig site endangering him and his new wife.
