Uses material from Louisa May Alcott's journals and letters to present a fictional recreation of a summer in the life of writer Louisa May Alcott. In 1855, twenty-two-year-old Louisa May Alcott moves with her family to New Hampshire for the summer where she meets Joseph Singer and experiences love and loss.

The summer of 1855 was an important one for Louisa May Alcott. At the age of twenty-two, she longs to free herself from family and societal constraints and do what she loves most. But love complicates her decision and she finds she must make a difficult choice. Mixing fact and fiction, this novel re-creates that summer.
