Although Soldeen has given Lief and his friends the gem, the sorceress Thaegan arrives to avenge her children. Lief and the other warriors must shed one drop of her blood to defeat her.

Lief, Barda, and Jasmine travel to the Lake of Tears and discover that the giant monster Soldeen that lives in it has one of the gems of Deltora. But even if they could obtain it from so monstrous a creature, they will still have to escape from the evil sorceress Theagan.

Although Jasmine warns Lief and Barda not to go through the territory of an evil sorceress, they ignore her warning and walk straight into the witch's minions.

Sixteen years after the rise of the oppressive Shadow King and his Grey Guards, Jarred prepares his son, Lief, to embark on a quest to locate seven sacred gems that will allow Deltora's true king to retake the throne.

After the king and queen of Deltora die and their young son, Endon, ascends to the throne, Endon's best friend Jarred uncovers a plot to strike the royal palace from within. Before he can act, he is accused of murder and must take refuge outside the castle walls until he is needed.

Lief and his friends arrive in the City of Rats where they must spend the night amongst the swarms of rodents. The next day they confront the evil creature that's using the third gem--the opal--to learn the future and counteract every move Lief makes. Lief prepares to sacrifice everything to bring peace and freedom back to Deltora.

With only two more gems needed to complete the Belt of Deltora, Lief and his companions are feeling the mounting danger from their foes. In the Maze of the Beast and the Valley of the Lost they will find the final two, so long as they can stay alive.
