When eight-year-old Havaa's father is abducted for supposedly aiding Chechen rebels, she is taken in by her neighbor, Akhmed. Seeking refuge in an abandoned hospital, the pair encounters a doctor, Sonja, and together they discover the ties that bind them together and will decide their fate.

In a rural village in December 2004 Chechnya, a failed doctor harbors the traumatized eight-year-old daughter of a father abducted by Russian forces and treats a series of wounded rebels and refugees while exploring the shared past that binds him to the child.
