After witnessing a man kill himself off the Edinburgh concert hall, Isabel Dalhousie becomes determined to figure out why. Isabel ignores warnings from her housekeeper and her niece not to get involved and begins investigating his death. At the same time, she works to end the increasingly serious relationship between her niece and a man she does not approve of.
