The hard-drinking, blasphemous Lady Ermentrude bursts upon the convent of St. Frideswide in search of her niece, the saintly novice Thomasine, and ends up dead, sending amateur sleuth, Sister Frevisse, on a mission to find the killer and take the suspicion off of Thomasine.
