Jim Sterba accepts an invitation from author Frances FitzGerald to visit her at a secluded retreat on the Maine coast, where the two writers find common ground despite their drastically different backgrounds.

Examines Americans' relationship with nature over the last several hundred years, and the increasing amount of space humans have taken away from wildlife. Argues that as Americans lost touch with nature and spent more time indoors, they spent more protecting wildlife and recreating natural landscapes which caused a multitude of problems.
