Escape from North Korea

the untold story of Asia's underground railroad
2012
It's a crime to leave North Korea yet increasing numbers of North Koreans are doing just that. First they go to neighboring China, which rejects them as criminals, then on to Southeast Asia or Mongolia, and finally to South Korea, the United States or other free countries. It's the new underground railroad.

While filming on the Chinese-North Korean border, they were apprehended by North Korean soldiers. They were charged with trespassing and hostile acts, imprisoned, put on trial, and sentenced to twelve years of hard labor in a North Korean prison camp. When all this news reached Laura's sister, journalist Lisa Ling, she immediately began a campaign to get her sister, along with Euna Lee, released. Eventually, with the help of high-ranking U.S. officials and others, she was successful.
