Presents the art of Flanders, the Netherlands, France, and Germany in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries with themes of the church and state, Protestant and Catholic, man and woman, artist and patron, and city life and court life.

Discusses the art of Renaissance Rome between 1400 and 1600 that was sponsored by the rival societal forces of the clergy on one hand and the nobility on the other. During this time churches, palaces, paintings, and sculptures were created, and Rome was restructured as an urban setting.
