Brown's illustrated translation of Perrault's tale in which Cinderella leaves behind a glass slipper in her haste to flee the palace before the fairy godmother's magic loses effect won the 1955 Caldecott medal.
With the help of her fairy godmother, a beautiful young woman mistreated by her stepmother and stepsisters attends the palace ball where she meets the prince whom she marries.
Cinderella, put in the position of servant by her stepmother and stepsisters, is able to go to the prince's ball with a little help from her fairy godmother, but in her haste to leave before midnight, she luckily loses her glass slipper.
Not only is grandmother eaten up in this Perrault version, but so is Little Red Riding Hood. Illustrated with photographs placing the tale in an urban setting.
