Cassia has always had complete trust in the Society to make decisions for her, but when she is being paired with her ideal mate, a second face flashes on the screen, and Cassia begins to doubt the Society's infallibility as she tries to decide which man she truly loves.
Cassia, having arrived in the Outer Provinces in search of Ky, learns he has escaped from the Society and follows a series of clues he left, which result in rebellion, betrayal, and a surprise visit from Xander.
Cassia, Ky, and Xander continue to resist the Society with Cassia working as a sorter in Central and looking for clues to the start of the rebellion, Ky in the outer provinces awaiting orders and flying planes, and Xander working as a medical officer and witnessing the start of a plague that was engineered by the Rising.
