Ser Duncan and Egg, his squire, enter the land of Standfast while in service to Ser Eustace, who has another troublesome knight in his service creating problems among the peasantry of Lady Rohanne Webber, a local noble harboring an old grudge.

When his master dies, a squire named Duncan, or Dunk, decides to remake himself as a knight and heads for a nearby tournament, picking up a squire named Egg on the way. But to compete Dunk needs a sponsor and he sets out to find one, encountering friends, foes, adventure, and hidden agendas along the way.
