The whole town of Ambler is excited about the pony rides at Josh's family hardware store, but the Vet Volunteers are worried. Gus, the pony handler, treats horses badly and Buster the pony is limping. Josh wants to help, but he doesn't know anything about horses, and Dr. Mac is out of town.

When their parents hire ponies to attract customers to the sidewalk sale, Josh and Jules are so excited. But they quickly realize the ponies are not healthy and their handler Gus has been mistreating them.
