Lief and his friends arrive in the City of Rats where they must spend the night amongst the swarms of rodents. The next day they confront the evil creature that's using the third gem--the opal--to learn the future and counteract every move Lief makes. Lief prepares to sacrifice everything to bring peace and freedom back to Deltora.

With only two more gems needed to complete the Belt of Deltora, Lief and his companions are feeling the mounting danger from their foes. In the Maze of the Beast and the Valley of the Lost they will find the final two, so long as they can stay alive.

Lief, Barda and Jasmine are on an important mission to save the land of Deltora from the evil Shadow Lord. They must find all seven stones from the magic belt of Deltora. The have already found the golden topaz, but now they must travel through the region ruled by the monster-soceress Thaegan to find the the second stone.

The evil Shadow Lord has become aware that Leif, Barda and Jasmaine are searching for the seven lost gems of the magic Belt of Deltora. He knows that the Belt's power will threaten his terrifying rule if the gems can be returned to it.
