Middle school principal Walter Russ starts a project to plant a tree on school grounds. Meanwhile, an Italian chef moves into a sixth grade classroom, a sixth grader starts living in a tree on school property, and the school's entire girl population boycotts the boys. The story is told through letters, newspaper clippings, and printed notices.

In this story told primarily through letters, Principal Russ wants the school trees trimmed, but the project is interrupted.
