In weeks Massachusetts was overrun by an insidious virus that is spread by saliva. Rations are handed out as the commonwealth are placed under quarantine. Dr. Ramola, a pediatrician receives a call from her best friend Natalie, who is due to give birth in a matter of days. Natalie's husband was bit and Natalie herself as well. Her last chance of survival is to get to a hospital for a vaccine and to deliver her baby. Ramola knows she only has a few hours at most, as they fight for their lives through a hostile landscape.

Seven-year-old Wen and her parents, Eric and Andrew, are vacationing at a remote cabin on a quiet New Hampshire lake, when one afternoon a stranger appears in the driveway named Leonard who talks and plays with Wen, when three more strangers arrive at the cabin carrying unidentifiable, menacing objects.

The lives of the Barretts, a normal suburban New England family, are torn apart when fourteen-year-old Marjorie begins to display signs of what at first seems to be acute schizophrenia, but worsens until they believe it is actually demonic possession, as they become the center of a reality TV show.
