For twenty-five years Dan Lyons worked at Newsweek, lastly as technology editor,---until one Friday morning when he received a phone call. Just like that---poof!---his job no longer existed. His boss told him they probably wanted to hire younger people. At the age of 50, with a wife and two young kids, Dan was out of work. Then he had an idea. Why not join a start-up? HubSpot, a Boston start-up that sold e-mail spam, had $100 million in venture capital and they hired him as a "marketing fellow." What could go wrong? He soon found out as he entered a world where the office vibe was frat house meets cult compound.
