Julie sets out to change the school system after she gets in trouble for helping her friend, Joy, who is deaf, and runs for student body president, but when she learns the other students do not like her choice for vice president, Julie considers dropping out of the race to avoid defeat.

Creating a graffiti mural to cover up a nasty slur about her best friend written on the back of their school for the deaf, Julia is expelled and sent to a mainstream school where she is treated like an outcast while continuing to paint graffiti before a mysterious fellow artist starts adding creative touches to her work.

Friends are a liability. Julia learns this the hard way when she covers up a slur about her best friend with a beautiful (albeit illegal) graffiti mural, sprayed right across the gymnasium wall of the Kingston School for the deaf. But then her (supposed) best friend snitches, her principal expels her, and her moms set Julia up with a one-way ticket to a "mainstream" school in the suburbs, where she's outcast as the only deaf student. Here, Julia finds herself dragged into a graffiti war, and she must risk arrest and expulsion to go toe to toe with her rival...or face losing the only piece of her identity that still makes sense.

In the mid-1970s, Julie decides to run for student body president after being sent to detention unfairly and comes to find that many of her classmates do not like her prospective vice president, Joy, because she is deaf.
