Children of ruin

A few thousand years after humanity perfected its terraforming technology and spread across the stars, creating an empire of planets habitable to them, what once was a great empire has now fallen, and the remnants of humanity and their spider allies are left by themselves on far distant worlds. Then, humanity and their spider allies detect radio fragments from some distant star, and some go in search of the signal's source, hoping to find long-lost cousins from old Earth. What they find is something horrific, something woken by their terraforming technology that should have been left alone.
