Chen Zhen, a student in the 1960s in Beijing, is sent to be a shepherd in Inner Mongolia where he learns about the Mongols' view of triangular balance between the earth, the wolves, and man, and attempts to raise a wolf pup, but the Han Chinese arrive, threatening the balance in the steppes with their promise of modernity.
