Ethnic writers in America

In one obvious sense, all American writers are essentially ethnic, the sons and daughters of immigrants, since - with the possible exception of the American Indian - there is no basic American stock. The complicated awareness of America's ethnic pluralism has become one of the shaping principles of modern American literature.
