Years after Richard Nixon resigned the presidency his legacy still remains shrouded in controversy. Noted throughout the book are many of Nixon's solid achievements with regard to domestic programs. Noted also is his complex, inconsistent, and contradictory term of office which was shaped by his personality and political practices of the time. The topical approach to this book allows the reader to observe the development of an entire domestic program or international relationship over an extended period thereby making it easier to understand some of the drawn-out issues of the time such as reforming welfare or ending the Vietnam War.
