Born in 1833 at Poplar Gove on the East River in Virginia, Sally Louisa Tompkins was the only woman to be commissioned an officer in either the Army of the Confederacy or the Union Army. Following the First Battle of Manassas, she established Robertson Hospital in Richmond, Va. for wounded Confederate Soldiers.
