In eleven-year-old Riley's mind lives her emotions Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust. When Riley's family relocates from the Midwest to San Francisco, Joy tries to guide Riley through this transition and make sure that Riley is always happy; however some interference by Sadness causes Joy and Sadness to be accidentally trapped in the far reaches of Riley's mind. Anger, Fear, and Disgust are forced to carry on causing more difficulties.
