regulation, Reconstruction, and the Fourteenth Amendment

Provides an account of the first major test of the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution, discussing the cases brought against Louisiana in 1873 by butchers who claimed they were being denied the right to labor by the state which had authorized a monopoly slaughterhouse in an attempt to address sanitation problems in New Orleans, and analyzes the significance of the majority and minority opinions of the Court justices.
