Anna and her family were among many refugees living in wartime London in the early 1940's. Because of their Jewish ancestry and Papa's political writings, they were forced to the flee Germany in the wake of the Nazi takeover. In England, where neither Mama nor Papa could find a job, how were they to survive? The financial hardships made it almost impossible to get by and the nightly bombings seemed more horrible each day. Yet fifteen-year-old Anna and her brother, Max, began to carve out a new life.
