After a week of being locked up, Light gives up his death note and all memories of it, but L is convinced that Light is guilty when the killings stop immediately after locking him up.

L asks Light to join the taskforce and help locate the second Kira, but when Light finally meets the new Kira, she's not at all what he expects.

Light, under extreme surveillance by authorities after he finds the Death Note, dropped by a rogue death god, and begins using the notebook to kill off criminals, is distracted from his mission by a family emergency, but it soon becomes obvious that someone is carrying on without him.

In his quest to rid the world of evil and reign as its god, Light finds a way to contact Mikami while under surveillance, beginning his journey to his ultimate destiny.

Light regains the Death Note and his memories and continues to evade L as well as the Shinigami thanks to the planning he put in place before he went into confinement.

Light is forced to pass the Death Note on to someone else to avoid detection, and, with no way to contact the successor Kira has chosen, Light must rely on his follower's belief in Kira's goals.
