Bird, a thirteen-year-old girl who has not spoken since being dumped by her mother to be raised with her Aunt Hannah at Saddle Creek Farm, forms a special bond with Sundancer, a guarded, touchy horse left at the farm, and both girl and horse are making great progress when Bird's mother Eva decides to pay a visit.
