Eleven-year-old Rinko grows up in a closely-knit Japanese American family in California during the Depression where she experiences a great deal of prejudice and indifference.

It's 1935 and the city of Oakland, California is struggling with the problems causeed by the Great Depression . Because ther is not enough work to go around,some people are resentful of immigrants. Eleven-year-old Rinko wants to be treated like everyone else, but there are some people in her neighborhood, like Wilbur Starr, who reidicule her family and make her feel different because she is a Japanese American.
