After visiting a great ape sanctuary, Marty and her friends set out to raise the money to "adopt" a chimpanzee by organizing a talent show at school and starting a pet-sitting business in Marty's basement--which soon gets out of hand.

The author, founder of the Fund for Animals, tells stories of mistreated and unwanted animals he has rescued and given sanctuary at Black Beauty Ranch in East Texas, and discusses the early childhood influences that led to the development of his deep feelings for animal life.
