In 1893 Montana, Big Red and Old Red Amlingmeyer sign on as ranch hands at the Bar VR cattle spread, expecting little more than hard work, bad food, and a comfortable campfire, but when they come across a dead body, Old Red pulls out his detective skills to find out the victim's identity and how he was killed.

Cowpokes Gustav "Old Red" Amlingmeyer and his brother Otto, down and out in San Francisco in the summer of 1893, decide to become professional detectives and set out to investigate the death of their friend Dr. Chan, landing them in hot water with crooked police, Barbary Coast hoodlums, and Chinatown tongs, all of whom are looking for the elusive "Black Dove.".
