Jim Qwilleran, a wealthy newspaper columnist in the small town of Pickax, and his crime-sensitive Siamese cat Koko, sense that something is wrong when movie star Thelma Thackeray, supposedly a native of Moose County, returns home after a six-decade-long Hollywood career to open a film club in the deserted opera house.

The people of Moose County are looking forward to celebrating the town's bicentennial, until a dead body is found, forcing columnist James Qwilleran to team up with his feline friend Koko to track down the killer.

James Qwilleran is enjoying a vacation at the Nutcracker Inn, but the tranquillity is soon interrupted when one of the other guests is found dead, and feline detectives Koko and Yum Yum do their best to help Qwill solve the case.

Millionaire philanthropist and newspaper columnist Jim Qwilleran's hopes for a peaceful spring season are squashed when he becomes involved in the investigation of the death of Widow Coggin, while at the same time trying to keep up with all the other strange happenings in Moose County.
