Kate is thrilled when she receives the Quarter Horse she has always wanted for her tenth birthday, and she can't wait to ride him in the cattle cutting contest, but when she learns that no girls are allowed to ride in it, she decides that some rules need to be broken.

In 1926, ten-year-old Kate, is convinced that the Quarter horse she receives for her birthday can win a contest at the annual fair and determines to participate even though the contest is open only to boys.
