Stevie and Lisa can't wait for the holidays to begin. But the Christmas season just hasn't been the same for Carole, ever since her mother died. When the local veterinarian hires her as a temporary assistant, Carole's mood slowly brightens. With so much to do, Carole can't stay sad for long. By the night of Pine Hollow's Starlight Ride, she's in the Christmas spirit. She's even looking forward to leading the stable's traditional moonlit procession through the woods on christmas Eve.

Lisa Atwood just cannot work up the nerve to tell her mother she really does not want to go to Wentworth Manor, especially after she wins a full scholarship, so her friends in the Saddle Club come up with a plan to make Mrs. Atwood have second thoughts about the fancy boarding school.

The Saddle Club members find themselves in over their heads when they take on too many projects at one time, but they promised to take care of a sick horse and find their friend a new horse to buy, and they are determined to accomplish both things; meanwhile, Stevie and her brothers call a truce in honor of their grandmother's visit.

Stevie, Carole, and Lisa are going to the racetrack, where they'll get to help cool off their friend's sleek thoroughbred racehorses by walking them after the races. They spot an official somewhere he shouldn't be, taking money from someone he shouldn't be talking to. Worse, the official sees them and knows they're on to him, so now they're in danger.
