Places globalization in its historical context, tracing its development throughout the centuries through trade, exploration, empire building, mapping, and language, and discusses issues related to the contemporary transfer of goods, people, culture, and ideology from the U.S. to other parts of the world and vice versa.

Describes the effects, good and bad, of globalization on international human rights; the history of human rights; economic independence as a human right; the impact of the media on human rights abuses; and the work of nongovernmental organizations such as Amnesty International and the International Committee of the Red Cross to bring a stop to violations and aid victims.
