A young girl named Hilda tries to make peace with the miniature elves that want Hilda and her mother to move from their house. Hilda embarks on a quest to save her home, and help the strange Midnight Giant at the center of it all.
Hilda is hardly at home any more, seeking days filled with excitement, and her mother can't help but worry...in a moment of tension, the pair find themselves flung far away into a mysterious, dark forest - the land of the trolls! Can they work together to escape the clutches of these sinister stone creatures?.
In the mountains where she lives with her mother, Hilda finds many adventures and friends to share them with, including an antlered fox named Twig, a lost giant, a wood man, a wandering water spirit, and a mistakenly-belled rock troll.
Hilda's world is upset as she faces the prospect of leaving her snow-capped birthplace for the city when her mother, an architect, is offered a job. As Hilda tries to make a case for staying where they are, she must find a way to befriend the tiny elves who have recently been causing trouble for the household, and at the same time, find out about the giant she keeps seeing at night.
