Thirteen-year-old Carag is a shapeshifter who has the ability to turn into a mountain lion and has just recently started living in the human world, but this choice to live with humans puts him at odds with his family of mountain lions. He begins attending Clearwater High, a school for shapeshifters of all kinds from all over the world, and he soon finds a sense of belonging that he hasn't experienced since he left his family. But Carag also finds himself going up against a wolf pack that bullies the "prey" animals, befriending a group of misfits, and developing a crush on a girl.
