Fourteen-year-old Belle Song investigates what she thinks is a meteor that has crashed near her family's Martian farm, and discovers two alien refugees fleeing a civil war. The aliens can shape-shift, and the Martians are suspicious of them; but Belle decides to do whatever she can to protect the alien refugees.

Details mankind's efforts to study Mars over the last fifty years with both telescopes and artificial satellites sent into orbit. Examines what we have discovered about the planet in this time and considers where future research may lead.
